Of the 12 barangays in the Local Government Unit of Alegria, Surigao del Norte, Barangay Anahaw was the first to construct the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in response to Alegria Solid Waste Management Program as mandated by RA 9003, the Solid Waste Management Act of the Philippines.
Last December 5, 2009, Barangay Anahaw Officials headed by Hon. Barangay Captain Nelita C. Calubag in the presence of Hon. Mayor Dominador G. Esma, Jr. and members of the Sangguniang Bayan attended the Launching of Basura Mo Bayloan Ko Program. The concept of this program is to exchange household waste/garbage with rice. For every 5 kilos of segregated waste (bio-degradable, non-biodegradable and special waste) delivered to the Material Recovery Facility established by Barangay Anahaw, it will be exchanged with 1 kilo rice.
With this program being undertaken by Barangay Anahaw, it is expected that sooner or later, barangay residents would soon appreciate the undertaking because the MRF produces organic fertilizers useful to fertilize agriculturally grown plants that will provide better yield, thus, add household income.
In the same occasion, Mayor Esma handed a check to Barangay Captain Calubag in the amount of Php10,000.00 witnessed by municipal and barangay officials to support and sustain the Basura Mo Baylo-an Ko Program of Barangay Anahaw.
The Barangay Officials and residents of Barangay Anahaw was very grateful of the strong support of the local government unit of Alegria and to the generous private persons who donated sacks of rice intended to this program.
