Geographical Background

The Municipality of Alegria in the province of Surigao del Norte, at Caraga Region is situated at latitude of 9 degrees 28’ 1.20″ and longitude of 125 degrees 34’ 37.20”. It is bounded in the north by the Municipalities of Mainit and Tubod, in the east by the Municipality of Bacuag, in the west by Lake Mainit and in the south by the Municipality of Kitcharao. Political Subdivision

There are twelve (12) barangays comprising the municipality. Two (2) of which is within the hinterlands, namely: Brgy. Camp Eduard and Brgy. Ferlda; Five (5) belongs to the urban barangays, such as, Brgy. Poblacion, Julio Ouano, Gamuton, Anahaw and San Pedro; while the rest of the Five (5) is within the rural barangays, namely: Brgy. Alipao, San Juan, Pongtud, Ombong and Brgy. Budlingin.

It is a 5th class municipality having an area of 6,670 hectares, broken down as follows in per barangay area allocation:

The topography of Alegria is characterized by rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 60 m to 900 m above mean sea level. Adjoining the municipality of Alegria and the municipality of Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte is Mt. Kinabutan with an elevation of 975 meters.

Soil Type

There are three major types of soil present in the area. They are the Anao-aon clay loam which covers 25.47% of the whole area; the Bolinao clay covering 63.11% and the Kitcharao clay loam with 11.42%. Generally, the soil of these types is fertile. The organic layer of this soil is thick and not easily removed by rain, wind, fire and cultivation.

Hydro Resources

In the next generation to come ,whenever demands of additional electric power is needed due to increase in population and economic activities , the Lu mondo Falls can provide electric power enough to generate the entire area of the municipality and would mean no longer dependent from SURNECO.


Based on the provincial climate classification, Alegria belongs to climatic type number II. Dry months are April, May, June and August with lowest precipitation of 62mm. The driest month is May and the wettest month is December. Alegria has an annual average rainfall of 3,639.50 mm.
