
1. Population Distribution/Trends Of the 12 barangays that composed this municipality, Barangays Julio Ouano, Poblacion, San Pedro, Anahaw and Gamuton registered the highest number of population due to presence of necessary facilities such as good roads, power and water plus presence of commercial and industrial establishments. Secondary school, public market, churches, government offices, cable TV station and other facilities are located within these barangays. The rural barangays of Ombong, San Juan, Alipao, Pongtud, Budlingin, Ferlda and Camp Eduard have smaller number of population due to limited facilities as compared to urban barangays. Most residents in the rural barangays are farmers and farming is their primary source of income. While in the urban barangays, residents are engaged in trade and commerce, employment in private and government offices and the rest, are engaged in self-employment in agro-industrial ventures. Population density of urban barangays totaled to 112.13 persons per square kilometers, while the rural barangays has only 14.38 persons per square kilometers. Creation and or establishment of possible site for housing development and municipal industrial zone can be best accommodated in some rural barangays at Brgys. Alipao, San Juan, Pongtud and Ombong. Based on enumerators survey, Brgys, Julio Ouano, Poblacion, Gamuton and Anahaw are considered as urban barangays with a total of 1,608 persons per square kilometers. 2. Ethnic Population Most inhabitants of the locality is of Surigaonon origin with a population of 10,288 persons. Second is of Cebuano origin numbering to 891 persons then next is of Boholano origin registered at 149 persons followed by other tribes of origin which is already very minimal. Indigenous people commonly called as Mamanwa’s, represents a minimal number in the community who are settling at Brgy, San Juan, and in the uplands of Brgy. Budlingin and Camp Eduard numbering at 123 persons. 3. Poverty Incidence Unlike other places in the country, the municipality of Alegria is blessed with rich natural resources and with a vast number of agricultural lands suitable for agriculture. In the mainland municipalities of Surigao del Norte , Alegria is the biggest producer of palay, agricultural crops and forest products. Lowest average family income is registered at P 30,000.00 per annum.
