The Local Government Unit of Alegria, Province of Surigao del Norte sponsored a two (2) day training-workshop on Ecological Solid Waste Management last October 30-31, 2008 held at the Municipal Development Training Center in coordination with Provincial ESWM Council of Surigao del Norte, Provincial Environment Management Office and the Regional Office of the Environmental Management Bureau, Butuan City. The objective of the training was to enhance the skills and knowledge of participants in the proper handling of waste generated in the locality which involve waste avoidance, source reduction, re-using, recycling, composting and disposal.

In order to achieve the zero waste management, Mayor Dominador G. Esma, Jr. urged the Barangay Officials, Sangguniang Kabataan Officials and Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) to implement religiously the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (R.A. 9003) and should display that strong political will to do it in order to attain the good results of the program. The Local Chief Executive in his speech during the culmination of the training-workshop expressed his assurance to provide financial assistance to all the 12 barangays in the construction of Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) coming from the municipality’s 20% development fund for the year 2009. The MRF building will be designed to receive, sort, process and store compostable and recyclable materials such as plastics, tin cans, metals and bottles which will then be sold to junkshops and processing plants that will give additional income to the barangay besides from producing organic fertilizer from composting of biodegradable wastes to boost agricultural production.

The municipal ecological solid waste management council will conduct IEC and advocacy programs using traditional and non-traditional forms of mass media to promote the zero waste through the ESMA program of the LGU. With the active community partnership and collaboration among key players plus the effective monitoring and evaluation of the program implementation, success will surely be achieved.
